Research tells us that children who read for pleasure have enhanced levels of text comprehension, an increased knowledge of grammar and show improvement in their writing (Twist, L., Sizmur, J., Bartlett, S. and Lynn, L 2012).

Why re-reading story books matters
From this week, Year 3 and 4, Year 5 and Year 6 will begin to send reading books home. Year 1 and Year 2 will be sending reading books in the week to come as they finish their first phonics unit. We have invested heavily in developing our reading curriculum to continue giving our children the best start in education possible.
At our school, we believe that reading is not only the key to unlocking the wider curriculum but also to the world of enchanting stories. For this reason, we will now be teaching phonics using the Sounds Write approach.
Furthermore, the home reading books used in Key Stage One will be a direct reflection of the phonics taught in class. In Key Stage Two, the new home readers are fantastically engaging and will also allow children to begin delving into the world of classical literature. These home readers are a significant investment, but Oxford Owl Reading Tree is used across the world with exceptional testimonials.
Home readers will go home once a week on a Friday, children will have the books for one week and must return them by the following Thursday. The books will alternate between fiction and non-fiction and it is an expectation that for the fiction books children will complete a short comprehension activity to be submitted in school. These activities will be made available on the school website and should be submitted via Classroom Dojo using the portfolio section for teachers to give feedback. For children in Year 5 and 6, some of the books may take two weeks to read, in which case the comprehension and book would be returned the following Thursday. Giving children to opportunity to read and re-read books is crucial in developing their comprehension skills alongside their decoding abilities.
To engage children in reading, we will endeavour to have a visiting author each term, pandemic permitting. We have already had local author Adam Bushnell in, which the children loved! Children will still be able to take home books from our library to read at their leisure.
