A Melrose Learning Trust School

Easington C of E Primary School – Our Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed with our school vision at its forefront:

“May we give them the roots to grow and the wings to fly.”

Through this vision, children are given a strong foundation (roots) to their education.  This then enables our children to develop their knowledge and skills to become independent learners ready for each step in their primary school journey and beyond (wings to fly).

Our curriculum goes above and beyond all the statutory requirements of the National Curriculum for England (DfE, 2013) as well as reflecting our needs as a small village community.

Our rich curriculum has been designed to include the essential substantive knowledge that we want our children to remember in each subject. This knowledge is selected carefully and linked together by a range of abstract themes that connect learning and help our children make sense of the knowledge that they are developing. Children also develop disciplinary knowledge for each subject by a process of using and applying the key substantive knowledge. In doing so, they are learning to become scientists, historians, mathematicians, artists, musicians, writers and so on.

Our curriculum consistently builds upon prior knowledge and learning is planned in a well-thought-out series of lessons (Medium Term Planning) that build progressively towards a defined end point at which the essential, non-negotiable knowledge pupils need to remember, is clearly outlined and assessed against.

We teach our children to be safe and prepare them as thoroughly as possible for the next stage in their learning. Through a strong personal development offer, we provide our children with memorable experiences that enhance their learning, develop a wide skill set, improve resilience and instil passion and interest. Our curriculum teaches children about their local community and heritage and gives them a sense of pride in where they live.

We teach children how to be respectful and value others.

At Easington C of E Primary School, ultimately, we want our children to enjoy learning, be happy and gain the wings to fly onto the next part of their journey.
