PE update – September 2020

A Melrose Learning Trust School
Dear parents/carers, I would like to take this opportunity to provide you with an update regarding PE and sport in school during the Autumn Term. The first point to note is that children from years 1-6 will still, every week, access the statutory amount of PE required by the National Curriculum. PE is and extremely important of the National Curriculum and will not be omitted from taking place this Autumn Term. PE has also been risk assessed rigorously to ensure that when it occurs, it does so as safely as possible. Children should come dressed in their PE kits on the days they are having PE. Monday – Ms Lilley’s Class Tuesday – Miss Defty and Miss O’Neil’s Class Wednesday – Mrs Appleby’s Class Thursday – Mr Churchill’s Class The second point to note is that for the duration of the Autumn Term at least, there will be no competitions/festivals held. This is in part due to the usual venues not be able or willing to accommodate lots of schools, schools not being willing to compete etc. The Easington School Sports Partnership are looking at how this could be addressed with inter school competitions held where their staff visit each school and then collate the results. This is still under review and details will be confirmed when appropriate. The swimming tuition usually provided by school will not, for the Autumn Term, be taking place. The COVID-19 situation is providing many barriers such as transporting the children to and accessing the tuition (face masks on transport, travelling to and mixing with people from other bubbles/environments, rules for changing etc) but this is under constant review. However, the safety of our children is our primary concern and for this reason, the swimming tuition has been suspended for this term. Please rest assured that your children will access as much PE and physical activity as possible during this term as this will benefit both their physical and mental health, utilising the outdoor space as much as is possible. Should you have any questions or queries regarding any of the points raised above, please do not hesitate to contact the school via the office. Kind regards, Mr. Churchill
