At Easington CE Primary School, we strive to create a culture which aims to inspire an active generation to enjoy PE, encourage each other and achieve. We provide a safe and supportive environment for children to flourish in a range of different physical activities which is essential in supporting their physical, emotional, spiritual, social and moral development. We provide children with opportunities to compete in festivals and competitions to build their character and help embed values such as fairness and respect.
At Easington, we intend to deliver high quality teaching by offering a dynamic, varied and stimulating program of study to ensure that all children progress physically through an inspirational, unique and fully inclusive PE curriculum. We aspire for children to adopt a positive mind-set and believe that anything can be achieved with determination and resilience. We intend to provide children with the opportunity to enjoy being physically active, maintain a healthy lifestyle and by using the medium of sport, increase their self-esteem and well-being. We aim for children to develop the necessary knowledge and skills which will have a positive impact on their future by becoming physically active individuals to benefit their long-term health and well-being.
We work closely with Go-Well and the East Durham School Sports Partnership who provide outstanding support with teaching, Enrichment Clubs and Competitions and Festivals.
Curriculum
Long-Term Planning is based on a two year cycle for mixed classes in school to ensure full curriculum coverage.
Our PE curriculum is planned using the School Sport Partnership calendar of events and festivals, ensuring that our children are well-prepared for the competitions and activities they attend. This structured approach gives them the best possible opportunity to develop their skills and confidence in a variety of sports and physical activities. Please see below an example of the School Sports Partnership calendar of events:
We follow a Core Task curriculum, which provides a structured approach to delivering progressive skills at an age-appropriate level. Our class teachers and coaches use their professional judgment to differentiate tasks, ensuring inclusivity and equality for all learners.
In addition to this, we provide enrichment sports and physical activities, exposing children to new opportunities beyond the standard curriculum.
We firmly believe that every child can find a form of movement they enjoy, helping them to lead an active lifestyle. Through this approach, we aim to develop:
By fostering a love for movement and physical education, we empower our children to become physically literate for life, building confidence, resilience, and a positive attitude toward health and well-being.
At Easington Primary C of E, we recognize the importance of physical activity alongside structured and progressive PE lessons. We are committed to ensuring that all children engage in a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity every day, while also maximizing movement time within PE lessons.
To help children meet the Chief Medical Officer’s physical activity guidelines, we provide a variety of opportunities, including:
We acknowledge the positive impact of physical activity on the whole child—physically, emotionally, and socially. Increased movement contributes to improved concentration, behaviour, and learning, fostering a healthier and more engaged school environment.
Long Term Planning:
Enrichment Clubs
Some of our Enrichment have a sports focus to develop specific skills beyond the curriculum. Enrichment clubs are led by both staff and external specialists. Please see below an example of the different sport Enrichment Clubs in school:
Sport
Sport at our school has an extremely high profile. Our aim is to give children as many opportunities as possible to try new sports, with the aim of finding their ‘sporting niche’ and to direct them into community clubs.
We put as much emphasis on extra-curricular sport as we do curriculum PE and as a result most children access well over 2 hours high quality sporting provision per week.
Children have the opportunity to participate in sports such as football, tennis, basketball, netball, swimming, athletics, dance, gymnastics, rugby, judo, fencing, table tennis and cricket.
Children at Easington enjoy sport at our school. They have many opportunities to stay healthy, participate in new sports and compete in a range of team events across the year.
Activity Days
As part of our offer from Go-Well and the School Sports Partnership, we book several activity sessions in throughout the year. These provide children with a unique experience linked to sport and well-being and the feedback from children, staff and parents is always amazing. See below some examples of the different activity days that have been held in school:
A message from our Playground Leaders
Hello we are the Easington Playground Leaders. We are Key Stage 2 children who lead lunch time activities for our younger children in Reception and Key Stage 1. We plan and deliver the sessions every lunchtime to ensure children are active and healthy during lunchtimes. We teach our younger children the importance of listening, effort, teamwork, fairness and respect. Another important part of our role is to listen to what children in our school want so we spend time speaking to pupils and listening to their ideas to make PE and school sport even better in our school.
Active playtimes
Children have access to play time equipment, activities led by our sports leaders and lunch time supervisors.
Forest School
Our Forest School provision is provided by Sc.out.ed and takes place every Monday morning. Each class spends one half-term doing Forest Schools which means every child in school from Y6 – EYFS access this amazing provision. Pupils in our school love attending Forest School sessions.
Sports Afternoon
Sports Afternoon is always an extremely fun day for all our children and staff across school. Children compete in their House Teams across a range of different activities such as:
Each child earns points for their team and the points are totalled up to decide the winner.
